Unneccessary Travel Insurance Being Added By Some Travel Companies
The report suggests that nearly two thirds of holiday companies in the UK are adding on cancellation cover that the consumer does not actually need, which results in increased costs for the consumer.
Officials said that those that have an annual travel insurance policy are already covered, and those that do not have an annual policy could find that the cover is far cheaper elsewhere.
For a family that is taking a holiday in Britain some companies are charging around £45 for the cover, according to research that was carried out by the insurance provider InsureandGo.
This works out to three times more expensive that a week’s worth of travel insurance.
Over 50 percent of travel companies were charging around £20 for this cover, which was still far more expensive that taking out a travel insurance policy with a low cost provider.
Consumers that take out standard travel insurance will also be covered for other things such as lost luggage, injuries, medical claims, and delays, as well as cancellation, yet the cost of the cover is still far cheaper than many travel firms are charging for cancellation cover only.
